A detailed look at how you swallow

A VFSS, sometimes referred to as a "swallow x-ray", is a specialised instrumental assessment used to evaluate how a person swallows food and fluids. A series of x-ray images are taken while the individual consumes foods and fluids of varying consistencies containing a contrast material.

VFSS can help identify

Aspiration — food or fluids entering the airway The cause of coughing or choking during meals Swallowing safety and efficiency Appropriate food and fluid textures Strategies to improve swallowing safety Rehabilitation plans and progress monitoring
